About Us

Franklin County Humane Society

Founded in 1991, the Franklin County (Florida) Humane Society is a non-profit animal shelter located near the Gulf in the woods by Tate's Hell State Forest. Inspired by Dr. Hobson Fulmer, our mission is to care for homeless pets, prevent cruelty, and promote responsible pet ownership. We provide safe shelter, medical care, and loving attention until every animal finds a forever home.

Karen Martin, Executive Director

Karen Martin brings decades of experience and deep compassion to her role as Executive Director of the Franklin County Humane Society. A 1979 graduate of St. Petersburg College with a degree in Veterinary Technology, Karen began her career in private practice before finding her true calling in shelter medicine.

Her background includes five years in private veterinary practice and service with Charlotte Animal Care and Control, where she gained extensive expertise in animal welfare operations. For the past 16 years, Karen has led the Franklin County Humane Society with dedication and heart, overseeing daily operations, managing a team of staff members, and providing hands-on care for the health and well-being of the shelter’s cats and dogs.

With her strong network of shelter professionals and lifelong commitment to animals, Karen continues to be a driving force in advancing the mission of the Franklin County Humane Society.
